YouTubehaslauncheda$35-a-monthTVsubscriptionservicethatwillrivalUScablenetworks.
TheliveTVservicewillcarrymorethan40channels,includingsomeofthecountry'sbiggestnetworksincludingABC,CBS,Fox,NBCandESPN.
Theservicewillalsoincludea"cloudDVR"thatwillletusersrecordandstoreprogramming.
OneanalysttoldtheBBCthatYouTubeposedarealthreattotraditionalcablecompanies.
"YouTubeisalreadyanextremelywellestablishedvideobrand,anditsappsarevirtuallyeverywhere,"saidPaulVernaofeMarketer.
'FortheYouTubegeneration'
TheannouncementwasmadeatYouTube'sLA-basedstudio,whereitgivesfreeaccesstothenetwork'sbiggeststarstocreateoriginalcontent.
Thatmaterialwillbepartofthepackage,butthemaindraw,andthedetailmostlikelytomakecablecompaniesnervous,istheinclusionoftopchannels-includingthoseshowinglivesport.
"It'sliveTVdesignedfortheYouTubegeneration,"wroteChristianOestlien,productmanagementdirectorforYouTube.
"Thosewhowanttowatchwhattheywant,whentheywant,howtheywant,withoutcommitments."
TheservicewilllaunchlaterthisspringinitsownstandaloneapplicationonsmartTVsaswellasmobiledevices.Onenotabledrawback,however,willbetheabsenceofmajorchannelssuchasHBO,CNNandAMC,homeoftheWalkingDeadseries.
TherewerenoplansforasimilarserviceoutsidetheUS.
Stabilitychallenge
YouTubehasalsobeenslowtogetinvolvedintheincreasinglycrowdedmarket.Therearealreadyotherstreamingcableservicesofferingso-called"skinnybundles"ofafewmainchannelsatacheapercostcomparedtoatraditionalcableTVpackage.
Mostnotably,DirectTV-ownedbyAT&T-offersmorethan120channelsovertheinternet,butitscost-$70permonth-isconsiderablyhigher.
DirectTVhasalsocomeinforfiercecriticismoverstability.Atthebeginningofthismonth,theservicewentdownatperhapstheworstmomentimaginable-viewersmissedtheendoftheSuperBowl,andperhapsthemostdramaticmomentinUSsportsinrecentmemory.
Google'svastinfrastructureandexpertisecouldgivethemanedge,predictedeMarketer'sMrVerna.
